활자도서관 이름으로 발표하는 첫 번째 활자디자인 프로젝트입니다. 한글 타이포그래피 분야에서 명확히 소개되지 않은 ‘옵티컬 사이징(optical sizing)’ 개념을 정의하고, 이를 한글 명조체의 역사와 결부시킵니다. 세명조, 신명조, 신문명조의 뼈대를 하나의 패밀리로 묶는 데에서 시작하여 새로운 명조체를 개발하였으며, 각각의 뼈대가 가지는 뿌리에 특정한 ‘옵티컬 사이징’ 값이 부여됩니다.
완성된 활짝명조 패밀리를 사용하면 폰트의 크기와 굵기를 조절하는 것만으로도 각주용, 본문용, 제목용 폰트를 구분지어 활용할 수 있어, 보다 풍성하고 완성도 있는 타이포그래피가 가능해 집니다.
Hwaljjak Myeongjo
Hwaljak Myeongjo is the first type design project released under the name of the Type Reading Room. This project defines the concept of ‘optical sizing’, which has not been clearly introduced in the field of Hangeul typography, and connects it to the history of Hangul Myeongjo typefaces. Starting from the structural foundations of Se(Light)-Myeongjo, Shin(New)-Myeongjo, and Sinmun(Newspaper)-Myeongjo, we developed a new Myeongjo typeface family where each structural root is assigned a specific optical sizing value. With the completed Hwaljak Myeongjo family, users can distinguish fonts for footnotes, body text, and headlines simply by adjusting the font size and weight.
